Now this is a blast from the past. A re-read of a series I’ve read many times before. I have to say right at the outset that I’ve never really liked Kevin J. Anderson’s additions to the Star Wars novel series, whereas I’ve much more enjoyed Tom Veitch’s work in the graphic novels over the years. Anderson is responsible for the Golden Age of the Sith story here, also known as the Great Hyperspace War, whilst Veitch wrote Ulic Qel- Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon and The Saga of Nomi Sunrider. And one thing I definitely can’t complain about is the length of the story. This collated volume is lengthy enough to satisfy even the hungriest of comic book readers, and in actual fact was so weighty that I had to read it in short bursts at a time. The Golden Age of the Sith is set 5000 years before the Battle of Yavin ( BBY and sees Force sensitive explorers Gav and Jori Daragon accidentally stumble across the Sith Empire as the descendants of exiled Dark Jedi fight to claim the title of new Dark Lord of the Sith. This has never been one of my favourite stories from the pre-movie era, but I wish it were. The first great conflict between the Republic and the Sith Empire in millennia, the power struggle between Ludo Kressh and Naga Sadow, the luckless explorer siblings Gav and Jori this should be a good story. And yet I’ve always felt somewhat detached from it. The main problem is that.
left With Tales of the Jedi, the potential is as vast as the galaxy itself. We haven't scratched the surface of what Tot J could be. It's so far back in the past, that there is no reason to fear that any story we tell could interfere with core continuity. ― Christian Gossett, Tales of the Jedi artist[src] Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, abbreviated as Tot J, is a comic book series covering eight story arcs, all published by Dark Horse Comics. The first story arc, entitled Ulic Qel- Droma and the Beast Wars of Onderon, was written by veteran Star Wars author Tom Veitch, and was part of the first series of comics, which eventually became known as Knights of the Old Republic. Veitch went on to write the next two story arcs, The Saga of Nomi Sunrider and The Freedon Nadd Uprising, and co-authored the fourth story arc, Dark Lords of the Sith, with fellow author Kevin J. Anderson. With the successful completion of Dark Lords of the Sith, Anderson continued the Tot J series as the sole storyline writer, with Veitch opting not to continue writing for the series. Anderson went on to write the final two story arcs, involving the main protagonist Ulic Qel- Droma, completing The Sith War in the spring of 1996 and Redemption in the fall of 1998. In the years between the writing of The Sith War and Redemption, Anderson pioneered two more story arcs, both taking place 1,000 years before the other Tot J stories, and introducing readers to the events surrounding the Great Hyperspace War. Set during the Old Republic era, six of the eight Tales of the Jedi story arcs take place during the time surrounding the events known collectively as the Great Sith War, a conflict instigated by Sith forces aimed at galactic domination. These six story arcs nominally focus on the Jedi Knight turned Sith Lord Ulic Qel- Droma, his love interest Nomi Sunrider, and a cast of supporting characters, including Ulic's.
Tales of the Jedi is a series of comic books that are published by Dark Horse Comics and are part of the fictional Star Wars expanded universe. They cover the Great Sith War and the Great Hyperspace War and remained the earliest chronological Star Wars stories, until the publication of the Dawn of the Jedi series of comics and novels. The first books released covered the Great Sith War (4,000 BBY, or Before the Battle of Yavin). The latter were prequels that covered the Great Hyperspace War, which happened a thousand years earlier. His successor, Naga Sadow, provoked war with the Republic, and installed himself as the leader of the Sith Empire. He fought not only the Republic, but the forces of his chief rival, Ludo Kressh, and was forced to destroy his own fleet to cover his escape. Sadow landed on Yavin IV and constructed vast temples with the labor of his Massassi warriors. Six hundred years later, fallen Jedi Freedon Nadd arrived on Yavin IV, and learned Sith sorcery from the spirit of Naga Sadow. He took his knowledge and the treasures of Sadow to the planet Onderon, where he used his acquired gifts to install himself as king. His spirit continued to advise his descendants. Another Jedi, Ulic Qel- Droma, was sent to Onderon to mediate a conflict, where he met the spirit of Freedon Nadd, who told him he would become a Sith Lord. The prophecy came true when the Krath, a secret dark side society, attacked the Republic and injured Ulic with alchemically-treated shrapnel, and then injected him with dark side poisons that would ensure his fall. Exar Kun left his master.
