In collaboration with prescribers and local public health departments, pharmacists should protect their patients' health by being vaccine advocates through education, facilitation, and administration. As a public health effort, the goal of provision of immunizations is to reduce and ultimately eliminate the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases. With the current Board of Pharmacy regulations (effective September 1, 2013 the profession of pharmacy has made significant strides in advancing patient access to immunization services. Highlights of the current regulations include:   Appropriately trained pharmacists or interns can administer any ACIP ( Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices) approved vaccination including all vaccines indicated for international travel to adults 18 years and over via protocol. Pharmacists or interns can administer influenza and emergency-ordered vaccinations to children 6 years and older via protocol. Pharmacists must verify the patient’s immunization history by accessing IRIS ( Iowa Immunization Registry Information System) or a health information network prior to administering a vaccine as well as reporting the administration of that vaccine within 30 days. This process applies to all vaccinations EXCEPT for a patient’s annual influenza vaccine. Pharmacist must obtain one (1) hour of continuing education related to immunization practice per license renewal cycle. Sample Vaccine Protocols: - Full ACIP Recommendation Protocol (last updated August 2014) - Summary of Types of Influenza Vaccines - Travel Vaccinations (last updated August 2014) - IDPH Policy on Yellow Fever Available Documentation Systems: Iowa's Immunization Registry Information System ( IRIS) provides computerized tracking of immunizations for children, adolescents and adults who are seen in a variety of public and private health care provider sites throughout the state.
