I can’t say who is the biggest superhero in comics, but when it comes to their big screen counterparts, the debate is short: It’s Batman. With the release of The Dark Knight Rises, the collection of nine Batman feature films over the last six decades is on its way to billion in worldwide gross. To celebrate I present Batman by the Numbers, a feature that provides a numbers-based snapshot of each movie and its place in the filmography by looking at the box office, critical reception, and miscellaneous facts. Hit the jump for a comprehensive review of Batman at the movies, featuring Batman: The Movie, Batman, Batman Returns, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman Forever, Batman keepsake by Hammonton Photography, via Flickr LEGO birthday party cake topper the first was a barely modified Harley Davidson, and the second was a highly modified Yamaha. The expectations couldn’t be higher for Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight follow-up, The Dark Knight Rises (which hits theaters this weekend, for those of you living in I don’t know, some kind of cave). Seeing as the Batman franchise has gone through some extreme ups and downs in the 70-odd years since first being adapted by Hollywood, we here at Grantland thought we’d offer a bit of perspective. Here are a few handpicked highlights (and lowlights Batman Dances, Batman (1966) Jonah Keri: Batman walks into a groovy ’60s bar. Gets propositioned by a seductress named Molly. Molly asks the Caped Crusader to dance. Batman sneaks in a light neg: “ You interest me, strangely.” then relents: “ I accept your invitation.” Dance perfection ensues. “ You shake a pretty mean cake, Batman.” You bet your sweet ass he does, sister. Shark Attack, Batman: The Movie Sarah Larimer: Honestly, I don’t even know where to start, because I love everything that happens here. I love that the Bat Ladder is labeled. I love that Batman keeps all his wits about him. I love that Robin kind of sucks as a helicopter pilot. ( Right? Also, WTF does “increase sink rate” mean, Batman? Why can’t you just say “ Go lower”?) I love that they travel with shark-repellent spray. And barracuda-repellent spray. And manta ray–repellent spray. And whale-repellent spray. Also, that shark. Holy nightmare! Fatman (1943) Bryan Curtis: Ever seen the original onscreen Batman? From the 1930s and ’40s? He was portly. Fat. He was Fatman. Actor Lewis Wilson’s girth — if I remember my fanboy literature — was one of the absurd parts of the early serials. You can see a bit of his gut here, in “ The Electrical Brain.” Wait till they get a load of this load. Batman vs. Bane, Batman: The Animated Series Rembert Browne: If The Dark Knight Rises, featuring a potentially epic battle between Bane and Batman, is half as good as the cartoon.

Knightfall is the title given to a major Batman story arc published by DC Comics that dominated Batman-related serial comic books in the spring and summer of 1993. Knightfall is also an umbrella title for the trilogy of storylines that ran from 1993 to 1994, consisting of Knightfall, Knightquest, and Knights End.[note 1] Collectively, they are unofficially known as the Knight Saga. The story takes place over approximately six months. Bruce Wayne ( Batman) suffers burnout and is systematically assaulted and crippled by a super steroid -enhanced genius named Bane. Wayne is replaced as Batman by an apprentice named Jean- Paul Valley, who becomes increasingly violent and unstable, tarnishing Batman's reputation. Eventually, Wayne is healed through paranormal means, and reclaims his role as Batman. Knightfall resulted in long-term ramifications for the Batman continuity, as Batman's trust from the police, the public, and fellow superheroes had to be rebuilt, due to Azrael's violence. Additionally, Wayne realizes the peril and burden of attempting to work in solitude, leading to the eventual creation of the modern incarnation of the Batman family. The events of Knightfall also led to the resignation of Wayne's loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth. The entire Knightfall storyline took over a year to complete in the comic book serials, and in later years, the comics were reprinted several times, though never in full, as Knightquest: The Search and the prelude tie-ins ( Batman 487-490, Detective Comics 654-658) have never been collected.
